As far as opinions of Siddha Yoga and the "bad Things" that Swami Chidvilasamada and Muktananda have done go...I would like to see concreate evidence of this. I would alos like to point out that there are a lot of jelous, high power business people out there that are upset that SYDA Foundation has so much money and land and that they don't pay taxes in So. fallsburg. These people are trying to start something with SYDA Foundation by lying and I do have more than enough proof to back up what I'm saying. I know of 600 businesses that get on the internet and lye about the guru's just trying to make everyone leave Siddha Yoga. I am the president of the Natures Way Foundation which is an organization that brings eastern spirituality to the west. We have found Siddha Yoga to be the best yoga and meditation instruction in the world because it offers ALL yoga's...not just one (i.e. hatha yoga, raja yoga, shavism, bhuddism, hinduism, and etc, etc..). HOW can you find something more perfect than that? People also think that a guru (basiclly meaning a teacher) has to act a certain way. Now why is that...Whose rule was that? Let's just go back to the bible and do exactly what it says and be slaves to our minds and ego's again. That's another thing...I know I'm on an ego power trip right now myself BUT... people who are writing inj about Siddha Yoga seem to have worse ego's! VERY DISSAPOINTING! You're learning one of your own life's lesson right now, and not even paying attention to it! The Siddha guru's have always said to look inside yourself, meditate on yourself, honor yourself, for God dwells within you as you. TAKE A GOOD HARD LOOK AT YOURSELF!!!!

okay...I feel better. I will say this much...SYDA Foundation's board of directors are a little misguided and need to be thrown in to the garbage because of the things are ran in the ashram's and centers, however I have to give them some credit... they are protecting the guru's and people who love the god that dwells in themselves from people like you. People... get a clue. READ A BOOK FOR GOD'S SAKE..INFORM YOURSELF ABOUT SIDDHA YOGA...DON'T LISTEN TO EVERYTHING EVERYBODY SAYS. To everyone...with great respect, no matter what, Saudgurunath Maharaj Ki Jay!

What can I say? If you don't want to acknowledge the problems that are very clear for many of us, so be it. At least you have the courage to read about them.

So, why do you care what we do here? I also find it very interesting that you go to Nityananda as well as Childvilasandna. Doesn't that put you in conflict with Siddha Yoga proper as they do not recognize him?

I have been a silent reader of your website for a little under a year. My interest is that my brother is very involved with SY.  I have been to the NY ashram, and to an intensive, but I never really got deeply involved.  My family and I are very concerned about my brother's involvement in SY mainly because he is engaged to be married to someone also deeply involved in SY.

My question is are there traditions within SY when two people are married?  I ask this question because they are making plans that are hurting the feelings of several people in my family, such as not wanting to see us for any type of gathering the night before the wedding.  This is hard for my parents, who were very  much looking forward to planning a rehearsal dinner. This would be the chance for the families to meet before the wedding.

Anyways, the simple question is if you are aware of any SY practices that they may be taking part in before the wedding.

Thanks for your time.

E.

There are no specific rituals or rules in SY that would prevent your brother and wife to be from participating in any family events. That they may choose to isolate from the family is itself common, especially when the family is not supporting their involvement in SY. The deeper one gets involved, the more one tends to isolate.

I must be the only truly lucky person to be involved in Siddha Yoga. I got shaktipat without asking or paying for it. I attended a northern California SY meditation center for a few years without ever being asked for money (I guess they thought I didn't have any), I sporatically visited the Oakland Ashram and South Fallsburg during the late seventies and early eighties, never for more than a week at a time, I lived my life with a god conscious attitute and minded my own business. 21 years later I am about as free as anybody I have come across in terms of ease of living, abundant humor and earthly means. The fact that Om Namah Shiva is always in my mind has nothing to do with the shenanigans of the people running SYDA. I am sorry for those who got too close. It happens in all sorts of businesses. Sometimes I feel thankfull that I have never wanted to be an "Organization Man".I have fantasized about Baba or Gurumayi  saying stuff like "I approve of you", or "You are doing well", but was quite content to get freedom instead. In the late seventies SYDA decided to put a question box up in the Oakland Ashram. Each nite Baba would answer a few of the questions. When this idea was being announced, I thought to myself "Is there any question that I can ask Baba that I can't ask myself"? Immediately Baba's face appeared in my mind's eye, laughing and saying no. Yes, SY has some cult like features. So does the Catholic Church. I guess it all comes down to karma, which is not specifically a SY originated concept.

Hello Pendragon,

Thank you for your wonderfully informative site. It's helped me finalize the process of leaving SY, almost eight years since joining. I have in mind to submit a story as well, not because it will provide any experiences or views not already expressed, but to add to the size of the collection. Hopefully this will encourage other doubtful sadhakas to re-examine their "Yoga TM." I'm still nervous and scared, I still have that "Big Brother" feeling... but one has to move on. In the mean time, I was wondering if you could compile a list of SY swamis then-and-now, who left, who renounced their vows and why. Considering how visible swamis are to the SY organization, it would carry some weight to see a long list of defectors. Thank you again for putting so much effort into this site. I've devoured it within three days, and I feel so much more healthy for it.

What is interesting about this sight is that it is for people who have left Syda Yoga when in fact it is all about Syda Yoga.  You are fighting a raging battle within yourself, one that so totally consumes you it has become your life totally.  You once had a verry powerfull relationship with the Guru and obviously you had deep love (and attachement)to the physical form.  How can you deny the love you felt.  You have been so filled with sadness and anger that you have not allowed yourself to feel the great love in your heart.  And who showed that to you?  Not the physical Guru, for the physical Guru is only a whimsical manifestation of the Shakti.  We are filled with this notion that the Guru has to be a certain way because that is the way they "should" be.  For example someone wrote a letter about them discovering Baba "making love" behind a curtain.  How amazing Baba was!  He created all these Leela's for us, out of love for us so that we could learn to love the deepest, darkest and most terrible parts of ourselves.  Think about it!  Who was Baba? He was the supreme manifestation of love for his own Guru.  And out of love for us he turned himself into infinite forms, two of them which manifested as Gurumayi and Nityananda.  Wow, is that a powerful creation!!!  At the begining I said that this sight does great honor to Baba because you are illuminating his greateness by showing us how his play so totally consumed you. When I hear Baba storries I always go WOW! wether he is giving Shaktipat or having sex with young girls.  Who cares? Whats the big deal, get on with our lives, move forward.  So Baba is pointing to something very deep in you wich you consistantly resist looking at out of fear.  Only Baba out of his love for you created this terrifing Play to give you liberation!

P.

So you wouldn't have minded if Muktananda was fucking your teen aged daughter or sister? Or perhaps your wife or your mother?

Why do you even care what I do with this web site and my life? Unless there is a part of you that is bothered by what you have read here....why else would you have written?

Pendragon:

Over the last months, I have been contacted here at Synchronicity Foundation by a number of people who saw my correspondence with you, as posted on the "Leaving Siddha Yoga" website.

Interestingly, several of these people shared with me what they had sent to you in various emails, none of which you finally posted.

It seems most curious that your web page publishes numerous letters merely asking for a copy of the "New Yorker" article by Lis Harris, yet fails to publicly share other more substantial communications. Could this be because the writers do not fully kowtow to your own particular viewpoint about SYDA?

The first impression of the site given to newcomers is that of an open forum, welcoming all who wish to share their experiences. Yet, do readers really know that you wield the censor's razor, only posting what supports your viewpoint? Were your intention truthful exchange and growth, perhaps the website would include a wider range of letters and perspectives... not a mere faded echo of your own prejudices.

For the record, you are most welcome to post this current email!

Sincerely,

J.B. McFadden

Why should you care what we do here except for the fact that it puts Chuck in a bad light. Oh by the way, Chuck is formally known as Swami Vivekananda tells the world in is autobiography that he saw Muktananda having sex with one of his female assistants. Yes, yes I know I took it out of context, but JB isn't sex the same no matter who's doing it to you?

Hello everyone,

First sorry for my broken English I am Hindi speaking man from Bombay and knows Baba and gurumai from my child hood. My parent says that my birth is Grace of Shree Nityanand Baba(Original) after 30 years of married life my parents gave me birth and Nityanand Baba(Original) named me.

First I want to confess that I have become alcoholic and get tired of my alcoholism and pray to Baba (Shri Nityanand) orginal and with in 2-3 days I had a message of Alcoholics Anonymus (Twlve by twelve) recovery programme this programme is very famous in your contries and this is 100% pure spiritual programme now days millions of people follows this simple and suggested programme and live happy and contained life I am also member of this fellowship, in this programme we place PRINCIPAL BEFORE PERSONALITIES NOT PERSONALITY BEFORE PRINCIPAL. We all devotee had put gurus first and principal after guru. I think this is basic reason of our disappointment in Sidha Yoga. Guru is just a guide line he pointed his finger to the moon and we foolish people catch his finger guru is for true freedom not boundaries and we have allowed so called gurus to make boundaries around us.

With many years of experience of meditation and yoga Ian sure that you will get same power and beautiful feelings by remembering Shri Nityannad Bhagvan with Maha mantra OM NAMA SHIVYA this is oldest mantra in Hindus sastras they says that this mantra is from before beginning of this world and this mantra has tremendous power this is gift of east and recent revaluation of 12 x 12 recovery programme is gift of west to Humanity and today's world this 12x12 spiritual programme is most effective tools to cut all sort of illusion, and shako hallucination mix both 50%-50% and you will surprise by the result.

Could you please e-mail me the article "O Guru, Guru, Guru"?

Thanks,

Pendragon,

Fascinating article. It's a shame that one can never really get the whole story about something like this. As well documented as everything seems to be there's no proof really one way or the other - is Gurumayi a serpent or a saint?

L

I think she is a bit of both, like most people. But as long as she and SY continue to lie about even one issue, that makes for very dangerous environment. People are taking her every whim as gospel. Perhaps is she admitted that she is fallible, as Muktananda was, then people would begin to see things for what they are. Can you see Chidvilasananda as fallible?

Hi-

Yesterday, I threw out my Siddha books and a mala blessed by Baba years ago.  I said a prayer for Baba's  spiritual growth and tossed the beads into the Hudson River amidst the Manhattan Skyline. This experience and choosing a new mantra, void of any Siddha association, was a big weight off my shoulders.

Yours Truly,

Jim

Congratulations, Life goes on after leaving Siddha Yoga

I want to thank you for having the guts and the determination to bring truth to the surface.  In the face of our naivety and our infantile desire to find the perfect and painless parent and solution to the terror of meaninglessness and mortality, they lied and manipulated and treated us like the children we were.  I find it bizarre that they do not realize that their lies and rationalisations will inevitably poison the fragments of the holy grail they are so valiantly protecting.

Looking at their predicament however from a compassionate viewpoint, the level of falsity or half-truths (take your pick) is so deep and interconnected, where would they start to play straight and what of the consequences ??  e.g., how about potential lawsuits around the globe from enraged devotees who essentially gave money under false pretences ??   We know however that fear, ego and the $ will ensure that this will not happen and that in any case for every sect that is exposed or implodes, others pop up in its wake. Unfortunately or otherwise, we cannot legislate against the central desire of humanity to turn away from the trials of growing up and the terrifying solitariness of the totally self-reliant human being.

Cheers and best wishes

I have one or two friends who are a part of SY and they seem to be having a good experience.

In a Guru-based teaching, perhaps a secret is to - in spite of the temptation to do otherwise -- focus on the TEACHING and not the teacher -- I mean that part of the teaching that reminds us that we are, each one, in intimate connection with the Universal Spirit of Love within.

The issues are complex ones ... as an educator I keep thinking that it goes back to the many many years that students are spending in schools, most of which do not focus on developing a sense of self ...

So, young people in particular are vulnerable to giving themselves over to an idealized "other" -- what are the implications for us as teachers, parents, citizens?

T.

The problem with a Guru-based teaching is that despite the teachings, the bottom line always comes back to worshipping the Guru.

I don't think that age or education provides any protection for becoming duped. We all need something to believe in and when we don't believe in our selves, off we go, looking for 'the way' from someone else. While I do not think there is anything wrong in having a teacher, there is an inherent problem when that teacher claims perfection in thoughts and actions. While we can't teach children about every potential pitfall in life, perhaps we can teach them to trust themselves and to develop the ability to be critically perceptive about things. "If it looks to good to be true, it probably is."

Yes, there are a few interesting points here and there amongst some rather strange rambleings. By posting this here, we do not imply support for what is said.
